This Global Climate Coalition (GCC) letter to journalists covered two TIME articles about climate change, one from 1989 and another from 1994. The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.
The two TIME articles GCC referenced differ in their worry over CO2 and climate change, with the 1989 article stating potential climate change is a major threat, and then the 1994 article claiming that people should, “start worrying about the next Ice Age instead.” GCC said TIME’s change in tone, “does point out the fact that the science of climate change continues to be uncertain.”
