This Global Climate Coalition (GCC) memo titled “Preview for Media” covered the 1999 Conference of the Parties (COP) 5 climate conference, in Bonn, Germany. The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.

In this memo addressed to “Interested Climate Change media,” GCC’s executive director, Glenn Kelly, summarized topics planned to be discussed and debated at the COP 5. Kelly raised concerns about the economic effects of cutting climate emissions, how the participation of developing countries in emissions reductions is essential, and that there needs to be a clear consensus on how emission cuts are measured. The memo also argued that there needs to be “procedures regarding compliance with the emissions targets.”
