1993 GCC Debates Global Warming Policy News Release

This 1993 document is a letter from John Shlaes, Executive Director of the Global Climate Coalition (GCC). The GCC was an industry-funded organization that opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.

Addressed as, “Dear Reporter,” this letter was likely sent out to many members of the press. The letter highlights the uncertainty of climate science and directs readers to specific articles that reinforce the GCC’s position, which Shlaes describes in this statement:

“The debate over whether the Earth is on a collision course with catastrophic climate change has been driven in part by vociferous commentary by individuals using simplistic theoretical models and yet incomplete data.”

Shlaes also suggests that the articles attached to his letter (which are currently not available with this document) “will help put this debate in perspective.”

This document is part of the private collection of Nicky Sundt, a Washington-based climate change science, policy and communications expert.
