This document is a 1989 letter from the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) attempting to solicit meetings with senators and their staff. This document was featured in Utilities Knew, a report published by the Energy and Policy Institute that shows electric utility companies understood climate change as far back as the 1960s. The industry-funded GCC opposed greenhouse gas regulations through direct engagement and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.
In December 1989, Robert Minter of GCC mailed this introductory letter to a staffer of Senator John Heinz. Hoping to schedule a meeting with the staffer, Minter introduced himself as an employee of Southern Company and GCC’s liaison to the senate. He also introduced some of the committee’s leadership, “the coalition is chaired by Tom Lambrix of Phillips Petroleum and staffed by Jana Oakley and others of the National Association of Manufacturers.”
