This 1998 Global Climate Coalition (GCC) document was distributed at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Fourth Conference of the Parties. The document used excerpted quotes from respected climate scientists to confirm the GCC’s opposition to greenhouse gas regulations. Through direct engagement with government officials and the public, and collaboration with affiliated climate deniers, the GCC spread climate change science denial and regulatory delay from 1989 to 2002. Its membership spanned across the automotive, utility, manufacturing, petroleum, and mining industries.
The GCC assembled the quotes to emphasize anthropogenic climate change as a question, despite internally acknowledging its legitimacy internally in 1995. The GCC wrote, “[w]hile it is certain the Protocol would impose enormous burdens on America’s economy, there is no scientific certainty that human activity affects global climate.”
